How the tip pooling calculator works

Enter the total tips collected for the shift, choose how much goes to the kitchen or back-of-house as a tip-out, and list who worked. The calculator distributes what's left using the method you pick:

Payouts are rounded to the cent. Any leftover cents are shown as a remainder so the sheet always balances to the total.

Tip pooling vs. tip-out vs. tip sharing

Tip pooling means all tipped staff put their tips into one pool that is redistributed by a rule. Tip-out is when tipped staff pass a fixed percentage to support staff such as the kitchen, bussers or barbacks. Tip sharing is the general term for either. This calculator handles a pool with an optional tip-out in one step.

Is tip pooling legal?

In most places yes, with rules. In the United States, federal law lets employers require a tip pool among employees, but managers and supervisors may not keep any portion of it, and whether back-of-house staff can be included depends on whether a tip credit is taken. Canadian provinces, the UK (the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023) and Australian states each have their own rules. This tool applies the rule you set; it does not give legal advice. Check your local regulations or ask an employment lawyer before adopting a policy.

FAQ

Can I save my rules or my team? Not in the free calculator — it runs entirely in your browser and nothing is stored. Saved rules, history and CSV import are in Pro.

Does it handle credit-card processing fees? Deduct the fee from the total before entering it if your policy allows it; many jurisdictions restrict this. Pro lets you set a fee percentage once.

Can I import the tips report from my POS? Pro imports CSV exports from Toast, Square, Clover and a generic format.
